(Nicotinamide mononucleotideNMN), a product of the NAMPT reaction and a key NAD+ intermediate ameliorates glucose intolerance by restoring NAD+ levels in HFD-induced T2D mice. NMN also enhances hepatic sensitivity and restores gene expression related to oxidative stress, inflammatory response, and circadian rhythm, partly through SIRT1 activation. NMN is used for studying binding motifs within RNA aptamers and ribozyme activation processes involving β-nicotinamide mononucleotide (Beta-NMN)-activated RNA fragments.

In studies on mice, NMN has been shown to reverse age-related arterial dysfunction by decreasing oxidative stress. A long-term study indicates that NMN can slow down the physiologic decline in aging mice. As a result, the older mice in the study have metabolism and energy levels resembling those of younger mice, with extended life spans. However, NMN did not show similar beneficial effects in young mice.
The anti-aging properties are being tested on humans in Japan.
