1. Neutralization thickening
Carbopol 2050 is usually neutralized to form salt, which thickens the coiled molecules by electric repulsion. Sodium hydroxide and triethanolamine are commonly used as neutralizers, which is why kapoor is sensitive to ions.
2. Hydrogen bond thickening
As a carboxyl group donor, Carbopol 2050 molecules can combine with one or more hydroxyl groups to form hydrogen bonds and thicken. This neutralization method takes time. The commonly used hydroxyl groups are non-ionic surfactants and polyols.
Suggested applications include clear gels, hydro-alcoholic gels, surfactant systems (specialty shampoos, cleaning products, etc.), and high electrolyte systems (aloe gels, etc.).
