Benzbromarone is a uricosuric agent and non-competitive inhibitor of xanthine oxidase used in the treatment of gout, especially when allopurinol, a first-line treatment, fails or produces intolerable adverse effects. It is structurally related to the antiarrhythmic amiodarone.
Benzbromarone has the effect of inhibiting the reabsorption of uric acid by the renal tubules and thus reducing the concentration of uric acid in the blood. It is easily absorbed by oral administration, and its metabolite is effective. The blood uric acid is 66.5% before taking the drug 24 hours after taking the drug. Used to treat gout.
