7. It has also been reported that cimetidine can also be used to treat herpes zoster and other herpetic infections including genitalia. It can also be used for androgen induced alopecia, acne, hirsutism, herpes zoster, etc.

Adverse reactions:
Characteristics of adverse reactions: the incidence of adverse reactions of this drug is 1% or higher, mainly due to its anti androgen activity and central nervous system effect
1. Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal distension, constipation, bitter mouth, dry mouth, slight elevation of serum aminotransferase, and severe hepatitis, liver necrosis and fatty change were occasionally seen. In patients with liver cirrhosis, hepatic encephalopathy may be induced. Sudden withdrawal of the drug may cause chronic peptic ulcer perforation, which is estimated to be caused by high acidity rebound after discontinuation. It is also reported that cimetidine can cause acute pancreatitis.
2. Hematological system: cimetidine has certain inhibitory effect on bone marrow, including neutropenia and pancytopenia; there are also reports of thrombocytopenia and agranulocytosis; only one case reports autoimmune hemolytic anemia, aplastic anemia and eosinophilia. The adverse reactions of cimetidine in the hematological system are often seen in patients with severe complications, or receiving anti metabolic hydrocarbon drugs or other treatments leading to neutropenia.
3. Nervous / mental system: (1) dizziness, headache, fatigue, drowsiness are common; a few patients may have reversible confusion of consciousness, disorientation, restlessness, dullness, language ambiguity, local convulsions or epileptic seizures, delirium, depression, hallucination, extrapyramidal system reaction and motor polyneuropathy. After neurotoxicity symptoms appear, it can disappear only by reducing the dosage of drugs, and can also be treated with physostigmine. (2) In the treatment of gastrointestinal complications of alcoholism, delirium tremens may appear, which is similar to abstinence syndrome. (3) The neuropsychiatric adverse reactions of cimetidine mainly occurred in severe patients, including elderly patients, children, patients with liver and kidney dysfunction, patients with mental history, patients with brain diseases and high-dose medication. In addition, pseudohypothyroidism may be more sensitive to the neurotoxicity of cimetidine.
4. Endocrine / metabolic system: cimetidine has mild anti androgen effect, including abnormal lipid metabolism, hyperprolactinemia, decreased plasma testosterone level and increased gonadotropin level, male breast development and breast distending pain, and female galactorrhea.
5. Cardiovascular system: bradycardia, facial flush, etc. During intravenous injection, sudden drop of blood pressure, atrial premature beat, cardiac arrest and respiratory arrest were occasionally seen.
6.Urinary / reproductive system: (1) cimetidine can cause transient increase of serum creatinine level and decrease of creatinine clearance rate. The mechanism is that cimetidine competes with creatinine for tubular secretion. There are also reports of acute renal damage, renal function can return to normal after withdrawal. (2) Interstitial nephritis: it can disappear after stopping medicine. (3) Sexual dysfunction: when the dosage is large (more than 1.6g per day), it can cause impotence, sexual desire decline, sperm count decrease, etc., but it can return to normal after stopping the drug. (4) Cimetidine treatment can lead to acute metastasis necrosis in patients with renal allogeneic transfer.
7. Eyes: optic neuropathy may occur. It is speculated that cimetidine has zinc chelating effect, which leads to the deficiency of zinc content in the body, thus causing optic neuropathy. There were also reports of ophthalmoplegia.
8. Skin: cimetidine can inhibit sebum secretion, induce exfoliative dermatitis, dry skin, sebum deficient dermatitis, alopecia, etc.; it can also cause allergic reactions (such as rash, giant urticaria), Shi Yue syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis.
9. Musculoskeletal: muscle spasm or myalgia may occur after long-term medication.
10. Carcinogenicity: the long-term toxicity study of cimetidine in mice showed that the incidence of benign Leydig cell tumor was higher than that of control group, but there was no such adverse reaction in clinic.
Others: (1) cimetidine can reduce the acidity in the stomach, cause the growth of microorganisms in the stomach, and infection may occur in the case of nausea. (2) Rare fever, hypoosmia, etc.
