When the tungsten cutter is reverse milling, the tungsten cutter blade starts cutting at zero chip thickness. This creates a high cutting force that pushes the tungsten cutter and the workpiece away from each other. When a tungsten steel milling cutter blade is forced into the cut, it usually comes into contact with the machining hardened surface caused by the blade being cut, producing friction and polishing effects due to friction and high temperature. Cutting forces also lift the workpiece off the workbench more easily. When downmilling a tungsten mill, the tungsten mill blade starts cutting at the maximum chip thickness. This avoids polishing effects by reducing heat and reducing the hardening tendency of the process. The application of extreme chip thickness is advantageous and the cutting force is more likely to push the workpiece into the tungsten milling cutter for the tungsten milling blade to perform the cutting action.
