Colistin sulfate, white or near-white powder, odorless, bitter and hygroscopic, soluble in water, slightly soluble in methanol, ethanol, almost insoluble in acetone, ether, etc., free base slightly soluble in water. Stable in the range of PH3-7.5. Colistin sulfate is produced by polymyxa, and has strong antibacterial activity against Gram-negative bacteria, and is used for treating intestinal diseases caused by Gram-negative bacteria. Colistin sulfate is highly effective against strains of Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella spp., Haemophilus spp., Shigella spp., Pasteurella spp., Brucella spp., Aerobacter aerogenes and Bordetella bronchiseptica.
Gram positive bacteria are generally less sensitive, but there are some sensitive strains such as Staphylococcus spp., Bacillus spp., Streptococcus pyogenes and Corynebacterium spp.
