Black cohosh is a perennial wildflower native to northeastern America. More than two centuries ago, Native Americans discovered that the roots of black cohosh help relieve menstrual cramps and menopausal symptoms including red tide fever, anxiety, mood swings and sleep disturbances. Today, black cohosh root is still used for these purposes. In fact, the herb has been widely used in Europe for more than 40 years, and in Germany it is approved for premenstrual discomfort, dysmenorrhea and menopausal symptoms. Black cohosh is also known as main cohosh, its main active ingredient is terpene glycoside. Black cohosh has an estrogen-like effect and regulates the endocrine balance, which can help relieve menopause symptoms such as insomnia, hot flashes, back pain and emotional loss. At least eight specific trials have reported that the use of black cohosh is safe and effective in improving symptoms in menopausal women. Therefore, in clinical practice, many doctors recommend menopausal women to take black cohosh extract with high concentration.
