Ferrosilicon is an alloy of iron and silicon. Ferrosilicon is coke, steel chips, quartz (or silica) as raw materials, with electric furnace smelting made of ferrosilicon alloy. Because silicon and oxygen are easy to combine into silicon dioxide, so iron silicon is often used as a deoxidizer in steelmaking. At the same time, due to the release of a lot of heat when SiO2 is generated, it is also favorable to improve the temperature of molten steel at the same time. At the same time, ferrosilicon can also be used as alloying element additive, widely used in low-alloy structural steel, spring steel, bearing steel, heat-resistant steel and electrical silicon steel, ferrosilicon in ferroalloy production and chemical industry, commonly used as reducing agent.

In the steel making field, Ferro silicon is used as deoxidizer and alloying agent to precipit and diffuse deoxidation. Adding a certain amount silicon of Fe-Si to the steel can obviously improve the strength , hardness ,elasticity and permeability of steel.In the iron casting, it is used as ball mile agent and alloying agent especially in the nodular iron casting, Adding ferro silicon to cast iron ,it can prevent the formation of carbide and promote the precipitation of graphite and the nodulizing. Then the mechanical capacity can be the same of steel's.
USED
Ferrosilicon is used in the steel-making industry for manufacturing carbon and stainless steel deoxidizers of most kinds of steel grades or alloying elements for production of insulating, acid-proof and heatproof steel grades, or pig iron modifier, as well as reducing agents for production of nonferrous metals and alloys. The chief raw material for producing ferrosilicon is quartzite. Approximately 5-6 kg of ferrosilicon is used in every tonne of steel produced.
The plant is making the transfer to smelting metal out of quartzites mined at its own Uvatsk deposit. The first quartzite batch was sent to the plant in March 2013. Bratsk Ferroalloys Plant also continues reconstruction of its smelting facilities. Once that is complete, the plant's production capacity will go up by 30%, while its electricity needs will be down by 10-13%.
(1) Used as a deoxidizer and alloying agent in the steelmaking industry. In order to obtain qualified steel with chemical composition and ensure the quality of steel, deoxidation must be carried out in the final stage of steelmaking. The chemical affinity between silicon and oxygen is high, so ferrosilicon is a strong deoxidizer for precipitation and diffusion deoxidization in steelmaking. Adding a certain amount of silicon to steel can significantly improve its strength, hardness, and elasticity. Therefore, ferrosilicon is also used as an alloying agent in smelting structural steel (containing 0.40-1.75% silicon), tool steel (containing 30-1.8% SiO), spring steel (containing 40-2.8% SiO), and transformer silicon steel (containing 2.81-4.8% silicon). Simultaneously improving the morphology of inclusions and reducing the content of gas elements in molten steel is an effective new technology to improve steel quality, reduce costs, and save iron. Especially suitable for the deoxygenation requirements of continuous casting molten steel, practice has proven that ferrosilicon not only meets the deoxygenation requirements of steelmaking, but also has desulfurization performance and advantages such as high specific gravity and strong penetration.

(2) Used as an inoculant and spheroidizer in the cast iron industry. Cast iron is an important metal material in modern industry, which is cheaper than steel, easy to melt and smelt, and has excellent casting performance and much better seismic resistance than steel. Especially nodular cast iron, its mechanical properties reach or approach the mechanical properties of steel. Adding a certain amount of ferrosilicon to cast iron can prevent the formation of carbides and promote the precipitation and spheroidization of graphite. Therefore, ferrosilicon is an important inoculant (helping to precipitate graphite) and spheroidizing agent in the production of ductile iron.
(3) Used as a reducing agent in ferroalloy production. Not only is the chemical affinity between silicon and oxygen high, but the carbon content of high silicon ferrosilicon is also very low. Therefore, high silicon ferrosilicon (or siliceous alloys) is a commonly used reducing agent in the production of low-carbon ferroalloys in the ferroalloy industry.
(4) 75 # ferrosilicon is often used in the high-temperature smelting process of metal magnesium in the Pijiang process of magnesium smelting. Replacing the magnesium in CaO.MgO consumes about 1.2 tons of ferrosilicon for each ton of metal magnesium produced, which plays a significant role in the production of metal magnesium.
(5) For other purposes. Silicon iron powder, which has been finely ground or atomized, can be used as a suspended phase in the mineral processing industry. It can be used as a coating for welding rods in the welding rod manufacturing industry. High silicon ferrosilicon can be used in the chemical industry to manufacture products such as silicone.
Among these uses, the steelmaking industry, casting industry, and ferroalloy industry are the largest users of ferrosilicon. They collectively consume over 90% of ferrosilicon. Among various grades of ferrosilicon, 75% ferrosilicon is currently the most widely used. In the steelmaking industry, approximately 3-5 kg of 75% ferrosilicon is consumed for every 1 ton of steel produced.
Smelting
Ferrosilicon is made by smelting coke, steel shavings, quartz (or silica) as raw materials in an electric furnace. Traditional smelting of ferrosilicon involves reducing silicon from silica containing SIO2. Most smelting of ferrosilicon uses metallurgical coke as a reducing agent, while steel chips are the regulator of ferrosilicon.

Application
Ferrosilicon is widely used in the steel industry, casting industry, and other industrial production.
Ferrosilicon is an essential deoxidizer in the steelmaking industry. In torch steel, ferrosilicon is used for precipitation deoxygenation and diffusion deoxygenation. Brick iron is also used as an alloying agent in steelmaking. Adding a certain amount of silicon to steel can significantly improve its strength, hardness, and elasticity, increase its magnetic permeability, and reduce the hysteresis loss of transformer steel. Generally, steel contains 0.15% -0.35% silicon, structural steel contains 0.40% -1.75% silicon, tool steel contains 0.30% -1.80% silicon, spring steel contains 0.40% -2.80% silicon, stainless acid resistant steel contains 3.40% -4.00% silicon, heat-resistant steel contains 1.00% -3.00% silicon, and silicon steel contains 2% -3% silicon or more.
High silicon ferrosilicon or siliceous alloys are used as reducing agents in the production of low-carbon ferroalloys in the ferroalloy industry. Adding silicon iron to cast iron can serve as an inoculant for ductile iron, and can prevent the formation of carbides, promote graphite precipitation and spheroidization, and improve the properties of cast iron.
In addition, ferrosilicon powder can be used as a suspended phase in the mineral processing industry and as a coating for welding rods in the welding rod manufacturing industry; High silicon ferrosilicon can be used in the electrical industry to prepare semiconductor pure silicon, and in the chemical industry to manufacture silicone and other materials.
