Mesh Technical Definition

To better understand nylon filter mesh or other synthetic filter meshes (such as polyester, polyethylene, polypropylene, PPS), there are some technical definitions of woven meshes that we should have general knowledge, such as mesh count, open area, thread diameter...

Mesh Count:

Mesh count is a term showing the density of the woven filter mesh, which indicates the number of yarns in said distance, usually in one centimeter or in one inch; For example: JPP10T-250, which means: Nylon Filter Mesh with mesh count 10 threads per centimeter

 

Mesh Opening:

Mesh opening literally means the opening of mesh, which is the size of two neighboring yarns, showing how big the mesh hole is, this parameter is important when selecting proper meshes for liquid filtration, since this parameter will determine how big particles will be captured onto the surface on the mesh when filtered, particles larger than the mesh opening will be obtained, while smaller will be filtered through the holes into the filtrate.
Open Area (%):

Open area is a term express in percent, which means the sum of all mesh openings as of the percentage of the total fabric area. This terms is also quite important when choosing suitable meshes for specific filtration needs, because same mesh opening with smaller yarn diameter will yield higher open area, which means more to-be-filtered liquid passes through the mesh at the same time (better flow rate).
Thread Diameter:

Thread or yarn diameter is the size of the yarn, which is measured before weaving, because after weaving, yarn/thread diameter is not correct as it is stretched during warping and weaving process, which will make the yarn smaller than original nature yarn. Yarn is another factor to be considered when choosing the right mesh, since yarn diameter will determine how strong the mesh is, the thicker yarn is, the stronger mesh will be. If the filtration condition asks for strong mesh, we should choose the same opening but thickness thread diameter woven mesh.
