Polymyxin B is an antibiotic. It has inhibitory effect on various negative bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella and Haemophilus. It is also sensitive to strains resistant to other antibiotics. However, due to its severe nephrotoxicity and nerve block effect, it is only used for short-term rescue of burns with sepsis, or for topical spray washing and external use. This medicine should not be injected intravenously to avoid respiratory failure. This medicine can be combined with normal saline to form a topical solution.
