       Kanamycin, an inhibitor of protein biosynthesis, binds to 30S ribosomes to misread mRNA codes.If the bacteria produce an enzyme that destroys kanamycin, it can become resistant.Kanamycin resistant plasmids are often used in molecular cloning as selector genes or marker genes.It is available orally and intravenously and is effective against a variety of bacterial infections. It was isolated from Streptomyces kanamyceticus.
