Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT)

INNOVATIVE SOLID WOOD PANELS OFFER NEW LARGE-SCALE DESIGN OPTION

CLT Basics

Cross-laminated timber (CLT) is a large-scale, prefabricated, solid engineered wood panel. Lightweight yet very strong, with superior acoustic, fire, seismic and thermal performance, CLT is also fast and easy to install, generating almost no waste onsite. CLT offers design flexibility and low environmental impacts. For these reasons, cross-laminated timber is proving to be a highly advantageous alternative to conventional materials like concrete, masonry or steel, especially in multifamily and commercial construction.

A CLT panel consists of several layers of kiln-dried lumber boards stacked in alternating directions, bonded with structural adhesives, and pressed to form a solid, straight, rectangular panel. CLT panels consist of an odd number of layers (usually, three to seven,) and may be sanded or prefinished before shipping. While at the mill, CLT panels are cut to size, including door and window openings, with state-of-the art CNC (Computer Numerical Controlled) routers, capable of making complex cuts with high precision. Finished CLT panels are exceptionally stiff, strong and stable, handling load transfer on all sides.

Common CLT Applications

CLT is commonly used for long spans in walls, floors and roofs.

CLT Sizing

Finished panels are typically 2 to 10 feet wide, with lengths up to 60 feet and thickness up to 20 inches. Widths up to 18 feet and lengths up to 98 feet are possible, but uncommon.

Advantages

CLT has some advantages as a building material, including:
Design flexibility - CLT has many applications. It can be used in walls, roofs or ceilings. The thickness of the panels can easily be increased by adding more layers and the length of the panels can be increased by joining panels together.
Eco-friendly - CLT is a renewable, green and sustainable material, since it is made out of wood. It can sequester carbon, but differences in forest management practices translate into variations in the amount of carbon sequestered.
Prefabrication - Floors or walls made from CLT can be fully manufactured before reaching the job site, which decreases lead times and could potentially lower overall construction costs.
Thermal insulation - Being made out of multiple layers of wood, the thermal insulation of CLT can be high depending on the thickness of the panel.
Light weight - Foundations do not need to be as large and the machinery required on-site are smaller than those needed to lift heavier buildings materials. These aspects also provide the additional capacity to erect CLT buildings on sites that might otherwise be incapable of supporting heavier projects, and eases infilling projects where construction is especially tight or difficult to access due to the preexisting buildings around the site.

Uses of CLT
Pavilions
High-rise buildings
Bridges

How strong is CLT?
Made from layers of dried lumber boards, stacked in alternating direction at 90-degree angles, glued and pressed to form solid panels, CLT has exceptional strength and stability and can be used as walls, roofs, and floors. Additionally, CLT is highly resilient to fire, earthquakes, and even explosions.

Why is CLT so strong?
CLT's perpendicular layers make it strong in two directions. And because it relies on layers of smaller beams, it can reduce waste by using odd-shaped, knotty timber that lumber mills would otherwise reject. CLT came about just as architecture was going through its own technological revolution.

Is CLT durable?
CLT is tough with excellent soundproofing, air tightness and fire safety properties. Fire safety will always be a concern, however it has been built into the development of CLT from the very start. Unlike steel, CLT maintains its structural integrity when exposed to high levels of heat thus making it safer.

Why is CLT so popular?
Charlotte is an awesome city to live in because it gives residents the feeling of city living with a small town flair. Charlotte offers its residents an awesome social scene, great school systems, gorgeous parks and outdoor venues, an amazing restaurant scene and so much more.

Can CLT replace steel?
But a beneficial difference is in the event of an earthquake, a CLT wall system allows any damaged connection devices on the building to be pulled out and replaced, often within just hours, rather than scrapping the whole structure - something not possible with steel or concrete.

Is CLT stronger than concrete?
These types of engineered wood are perfect for structural application. When compared with steel, LVL's strength to weight ratio is 20% greater. And, with CLT panels giving the same strength as concrete but having the benefit of being much lighter, what's the justification for overlooking timber?

Is CLT stronger than steel?
CLT is made with successive layers of dimensional lumber that are typically laid perpendicular to one another. Each layer has an adhesive applied, and then the layers are hydraulically compressed for a specific amount of time to create a monolithic slab of wood that "pound for pound" is stronger than concrete or steel.
