Menthol is an organic compound made synthetically or obtained from corn mint, peppermint, or other mint oils. It is a waxy, crystalline substance, clear or white in color, which is solid at room temperature and melts slightly above. The main form of menthol occurring in nature is (−)-menthol, which is assigned the (1R,2S,5R) configuration. Menthol has local anesthetic and counterirritant qualities, and it is widely used to relieve minor throat irritation. Menthol also acts as a weak kappa opioid receptor agonist.

Both menthol and racemmenthol are used as deodorants in toothpastes, perfumes, beverages and confectionery.Used as a stimulant in medicine, it acts on the skin or mucous membrane and has a cool and antipruritic effect.Oral administration can be used as a wind drive medicine, for headache and nasal, pharynx, laryngitis, etc.Its esters are used in spices and medicines.In the world, China and Brazil are the main natural mint production parks, with the annual output of menthol oil reaching 2000-3000t.

2. Widely used in daily flavor, edible flavor, tobacco flavor.Generally 1100mg/kg in chewing gum;400mg/kg confectionery;Bake food 130mg/kg;Ice cream 68mg/kg;35mg/kg in soft drinks.

3. It has the function of sterilization and antisepsis.
