Ethylene oxide (EO) is one of the simplest ring ether, belongs to heterocyclic compounds, is an important petrochemical products. Ethylene oxide is a colorless transparent liquid at low temperature, and a colorless gas with a pungent odor of ether at room temperature. The vapor pressure of the gas is high, up to 141kPa at 30ºC. This high vapor pressure determines the strong penetration of ethylene oxide during fumigation.
Ethylene oxide is the second generation of chemical disinfectants after formaldehyde. It is still one of the best cold disinfectants and one of the most important four low temperature sterilization technologies at present (low temperature plasma, low temperature formaldehyde steam, ethylene oxide, glutaraldehyde).
