Its properties are basically the same as glycerin, but its viscosity, toxicity and irritation are smaller than glycerin. It has good solubility and can dissolve many drugs, such as sulfonamides, local anesthetics, vitamin A, vitamin D, sex hormones, chloramphenicol and many volatile oils. It can be miscible with water, glycerin, ethanol, ether and chloroform, but it cannot be miscible with fatty oil.
A certain proportion of the mixed solution of propylene glycol and water can delay the hydrolysis of some drugs and increase their stability. When the concentration is appropriate, it can be used as the solvent for injection, with quick or prolonged effect. A certain concentration of propylene glycol can also be used as a penetration enhancer for drug absorption through skin or mucosa.
Propylene glycol has good viscosity and hygroscopicity, and is non-toxic, so it is widely used as a hygroscopic agent, antifreeze, lubricant and solvent in food, medicine and cosmetics industries.
