Calcium propionate is a new type of food additive. It is a safe and reliable antifungal agent for food and feed approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Calcium propionate has a wide range of antibacterial effects on molds, yeasts and bacteria. It is harmful, harmless to humans and animals, and has no toxic side effects.
Calcium propionate as a feed additive can effectively inhibit feed mildew and prolong feed storage period. If combined with other inorganic salts, it can also improve the appetite of livestock and increase the milk yield of dairy cows. Calcium propionate has the advantages of low volatility, high temperature resistance and good adaptability to animals.

1.As a food addictive,it is listed as E number 282 in the Codex Alimentarius.It is used as a preservative in a wide variety of products,including but not limited brade,other baker goods,processed meat,whey ,and other dairy other products.
2.In agriculture,it is used,amongst other things,to prevent milk fever in cows and as a feed supplement.
3.Propionates prevent microbes from the producing the energy they need, like benzoates do.However, unlike benzoates,propionates do not requrie an acidic envirenment.
4.Calcium propionate is used in bakery products as a mold inhibitor,typically at 0.1-0.4%.
5.Calcium propiionate can be used as a pesticide.

It is used as a preservative for breads, pastries and cheeses and as a fungicide for feed. As a propionate for food preservatives, calcium propionate is mainly used for bread, because sodium propionate raises the pH of bread and delays the fermentation of raw noodles; sodium propionate is often used in cakes, because the bulk of the cake is synthetically expanded. The loosening agent has no yeast development problems caused by an increase in pH. When used as a feed preservative, sodium propionate is superior to calcium propionate. However, calcium propionate is more stable than sodium propionate. In addition to bread, cakes, cheese, etc., propionate can also be used for soy sauce to prevent mildew and inhibit re-fermentation. In medicine, propionate can be used as a powder, solution and ointment to treat diseases caused by skin parasitic molds. The ointment (liquid) contains 12.3% sodium propionate and the powder contains 15% calcium propionate.
