Zinc oxide is an oxide of zinc. Hard to dissolve in water, soluble in acid and alkali. Zinc oxide is a commonly used chemical additive widely used in the production of plastics, silicate products, synthetic rubber, lubricating oils, paints, ointments, adhesives, foods, batteries, flame retardants and other products. Zinc oxide has large band gap and exciton binding energy, high transparency, and excellent room temperature luminescence performance. It is used in liquid crystal displays, thin film transistors, light-emitting diodes and other products in the semiconductor field. In addition, microparticulate zinc oxide has also begun to play a role in related fields as a nanomaterial.
Appearance and traits: white powder or hexagonal crystals. Odorless, tasteless, no sand. It turns yellow when heated, and then sublimates when it is cooled to white and heated to 1800 °C. The hiding power is half that of titanium dioxide and zinc sulfide. The tinting strength is twice that of basic lead carbonate.
Solubility: soluble in acid, concentrated alkali hydroxide,  insoluble in water and ethanol.
Zinc oxide is a famous white pigment commonly known as zinc white. Its advantage is that the H2S gas does not change black, because ZnS is also white. When heated, ZnO gradually changes from white to light yellow to lemon yellow. When cooled, the yellow color retreats. Using this property, it is incorporated into paint or added to a thermometer to form a color changing paint or a color changing thermometer. Due to the astringent nature of ZnO and certain bactericidal ability, it is often used in medicine as an ointment, and ZnO can also be used as a catalyst.
