Glutaraldehyde is a high-efficiency disinfectant, which has the characteristics of broad-spectrum, high efficiency, low toxicity, low corrosiveness to metals, low influence of organic matter, and good stability. It is suitable for disinfection and sterilization of medical instruments and precision instruments that are resistant to humidity and heat. Its sterilization concentration is 2%. The commercially available glutaraldehyde mainly includes 2% alkaline glutaraldehyde and 2% enhanced acid glutaraldehyde. Alkaline glutaraldehyde is often used for the sterilization of medical devices. Add an appropriate amount of sodium bicarbonate before use. After shaking, let it stand for 1 hour to determine the pH value. When the pH is between 7.5 and 8.5, glutaraldehyde has the strongest bactericidal effect. Glutaraldehyde sterilization is the function of its monomers. When the pH of the solution reaches 6, these monomers have a tendency to polymerize. As the pH rises, the polymerization is extremely rapid, and precipitation can appear in the solution, which will be lost after the formation of polymer. Sterilization. Therefore, alkaline glutaraldehyde is a relatively unstable disinfectant. 2% fortified acid glutaraldehyde is based on polyoxyethylene fatty alcohol ether as an intensifier, which can enhance the bactericidal effect of glutaraldehyde. Its pH is lower than 5, its killing effect on bacterial spores is weaker than alkaline glutaraldehyde, but its virus inactivation effect is stronger than alkaline glutaraldehyde, and its stability is better than alkaline glutaraldehyde. It can be used continuously 28 days.

Glutaraldehyde is the drug of choice for the disinfection of endoscopes. Many parts of modern endoscopes are not resistant to high temperature and are afraid of corrosion. Therefore, most endoscopes are disinfected or sterilized with glutaraldehyde.
