Introduction

Once hydration is complete and other liquid additives have been added, the crosslinker can be added. The crosslinker should be the last liquid additive in the fluid composition.
Borate Crosslinker is an aqueous-based crosslinker slurry with a pH of approximately 6 to 8. Since the crosslinker is delivered as a slurry, it cannot be readily diluted for metering purposes, as this action would cause the solids to settle rapidly.

Chemical Properties and Application

Borate Crosslinker is a suspension that should be stable for the shelf life of the product. In case of separation it can easily be resuspended by recirculating.
The Borate Crosslinker contains an alkaline form of boron, which will self-buffer the fluid to an alkaline condition, typically in the range of 8.5 to 9.0, and the slow dissolution of the Borate Crosslinker will provide crosslink delay. While the crosslink is not thermally stable to high temperatures, the wellbore and near-wellbore will have cooled substantially by the last stages, and sufficient transport will exist.
Borate Crosslinker will provide a further crosslink delay to that obtained by the slow dissolution of Borate Crosslinker. This may be a consideration for treatments for warm mix water and high polymer loadings.
As with any viscous fluid, the piping from the tote or container to the additive pump should be minimized. It is recommended that for Borate Crosslinker, that distance not exceed 25 ft (7.6 m) of OD no less than a 2-in hose. The line should be flushed with clean water, otherwise, the water carrier in Borate Crosslinker will evaporate, leaving a solid, dry, cake-like material on the hose walls, causing both contamination and restricted flow on subsequent use. The cake material has little adhesion and can easily be removed from the surface by brushing, or washing off with water.
