Xylitol is a natural sugar found in plant material used as a sweetener in various chewing gums, certain candies, and a variety of other dental related products. Studies show that xylitol can be directly beneficial to your dental health when used regularly because the mouth processes it into an acid that doesn't cause tooth decay and by inhibiting the growth of bacteria. It is estimated to reduce the risk of dental caries, also known as "cavities" by approximately 40% when used after meals and up to 5 times per day.
Although it tastes as sweet as regular table sugar, it actually has about 75 % less carbohydrates and has little to no side effects unlike other natural and artificial sweeteners. Even though it's considered a carbohydrate, it does not rapidly raise blood sugar making it safe for people consuming a low carb diet or people with diabetes.
