MCPA is used as an herbicide in the forms of its salt or etherified forms. It could control the broadleaf weeds such as thistles and docks in the fields of cereal crops and pasture. At the same time, it is also selective for plants with broad leaves which include most deciduous trees. Clovers are tolerant at moderate application levels. It is currently classified as a restricted used pesticide. Its toxicity and biodegradation are topics of current research.

Mode of Action
Selective, systemic, hormone-type herbicide, absorbed by the leaves and roots, with translocation. Concentrates in the meristematic regions, where it inhibits growth
 
Uses
 Post-emergence control of annual and perennial broad-leaved weeds (including thistles and docks) in cereals (alone or undersown), herbage seed crops, flax, rice, vines, peas, potatoes, asparagus, grassland, turf, under fruit trees, and on roadside verges and embankments, etc., at 0.28-2.25 kg/ha. Control of broad-leaved and woody weeds in forestry. Control of aquatic broad-leaved weeds. Often used in combination with other herbicides.

Form White to light brown solid, flakes, crystal powder or liquid. Same as 2,4-D except for replacement of one chlorine atom by a methyl group. M.t. 114-119°C V.p. 7.7 x 10-6 mbar. Non-corrosive. Solubility: At 20-25°C. in ethanol 150 g/l; acetone >200 g/l. Pol-Chwastox Extra*: Density 1.18-1.21 g/ml at 20°C.
Uses:
Translocated herbicide in small grains, rice, peas, grassland, sugar cane, tree crops, turf, and noncrop areas for postemergent control of many annual and perennial broadleaf weeds.
Toxicity:



(Rat): Acid Oral LD501160 mg/kg; dimethylamine salt 1000 mg/kg; isooctyl (2-ethylhexyl) ester 1606 mg/kg. Acid Inhalation LC50 >6.36 mg/l; dimethylamine salt >4.72 mg/l, isooctyl (2-ethylhexyl) ester >4.5 mg/l. (Mouse): Oral 550 mg/kg. (Rabbit): Acid Dermal LD50 >4000 mg/kg; isoocytl (2-ethylhexyl) ester and dimethylamine salt >2000 mg/kg.
