FAQ
1. What causes an increase in ETCO2?In severe cases of respiratory distress, increased effort to breathe does not effectively eliminate CO2. This causes CO2 to
accumulate in the lungs and more of it to be excreted with each breath (hypercapnia), which would cause the ETCO2 level to rise.
2. What conditions increase ETCO2 what conditions decrease ETCO2?
Hypoventilation (reduced minute ventilation) causes an increase in EtCO2. Hyperventilation (excess minute ventilation) causes a decrease in EtCO2.
3. Why does hyperventilation cause low ETCO2?
Increased work of breathing from pulmonary edema may lead to fatigue and respiratory failure. This would cause a rise in ETCO2, but the waveform will remain upright. Hyperventilation causes excess CO2 to be exhaled, which would present with a crisp waveform and low ETCO2, or hypocapnia.
4. Why is paco2 higher than ETCO2?
The PaCO2 - EtCO2 gradient is largely dependent on the physiological dead space and the slope of the alveolar plateau in phase 3 of the capnograph. An increase in the dead space can result in an increase in the gradient.
5. What are normal EtCO2 levels?
End-tidal CO2 (EtCO2) monitoring is a noninvasive technique which measures the partial pressure or concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) at the end of an exhaled breath, which is expressed as a percentage of CO2 or mmHg. The normal values are 5% to 6% CO2, which is equivalent to 35-45 mmHg.
