Sorbitol is a natural product found in apples, pears, peaches, and prunes. It is obtained by the hydrogenation of glucose. It is a kind of sugar alcohols. It is one of the earliest sugar alcohols used in Japan as food additives for improving food hygiene or as a thickener.

Sorbitol is mainly used as:
1 Raw material for producing ascorbic acid;
2 Nutritional sweetener for sugar replacement in confectionery and chewing gum, sugar free foods, etc;
3 As humectant used in tooth paste, cosmetics and tobacco, replacing glycerin;
4 Reducing water activity and extending food shelf life.
