 The shear strength is the basis for the stability analysis of natural earth-rock bodies, artificially filled river embankments, earth-rock dams, roadbeds and other earth-rock projects. The direct shear test of coarse-grained soil is a method of routine indoor test. It is the same principle as the direct shear test of fine-grained soil. It's just that the particle size of the test particles is large, and the size of the instrument used is large. Put the coarse-grained soil into the upper and lower shear boxes as required, and apply vertical pressure as required for consolidation. Keep the vertical pressure constant during the shearing process, and apply horizontal thrust step by step from small to large, so that the lower shear box is displaced, the upper and lower shear boxes are staggered, and the soil is subjected to shear stress until shear failure occurs.
