APPLICATION 1. Production of titanium metal. Titanium tetrachloride is currently one of the main raw materials for industrial production of metallic titanium. Through the solidification reduction method of titanium, titanium tetrachloride can be reduced to metallic titanium. 2. Production of titanium dioxide powder. Titanium dioxide is an important pigment widely used in industries such as coatings, plastics, and paper. Titanium tetrachloride is the main raw material for producing titanium dioxide. 3. Production of other titanium compounds. Titanium tetrachloride can produce many other titanium compounds, such as titanium chloride, titanium sulfide, and titanium oxide, by replacing the chlorine atoms inside. These titanium compounds have important applications, such as titanium chloride used in the production of dyes and titanium oxide used in the production of white pigments. 4. Production of other inorganic compounds. Titanium tetrachloride can also be used to produce some other inorganic compounds, such as tetraethylammonium salts and titanium acetate esters. They can be used in fields such as electroplating solutions and catalysts. 5. Production of special metals. Titanium tetrachloride can also be used to produce some special metals, such as zirconium and hafnium. 6. Electronic materials. High purity titanium tetrachloride can be used for the production of electronic materials, such as lead titanate, for the production of lead based infrared lenses and other optical instruments.
STORAGE Hazards posed by titanium tetrachloride generally arise from its reaction with water that releases hydrochloric acid, which is severely corrosive itself and whose vapors are also extremely irritating. TiCl4 is a strong Lewis acid, which exothermically forms adducts with even weak bases such as THF and water.
