Dressage arena surface need amount of grip and stability, a bit of give and rebound. The surface should not be too hard, otherwise it will impact the horse's bone joints, can not achieve shock absorption.
If the ground is too soft, it will lead to insufficient support and damage to the tendons and ligaments of the horse.
Jumping is very demanding on the surface of the arena. The more force you exert on the arena surface, the more support you need for your landing point. The surface needs to be strong enough to support the jump and give the horseshoe a boost, but when landing, the surface also needs to give enough cushion to achieve shock absorption.
