Calcium Carbideore is yellow-brown or black bulk solid, pure white crystal (containing higher CaC2 is purple). Density 2.22g/cubic cm, melting point 2300ºC (related to the content of CaC2), immediately react with water, generate acetylene, and release heat, calcium carbide content different melting point also changes.
Impurities: because calcium carbide often contains calcium arsenide (Ca3 As2), calcium phosphide (Ca3 P2) and other impurities, and water action at the same time release hydrogen arsenide (AsH3), phosphide (PH3) and other toxic gases, so the use of acetylene produced by calcium carbide is toxic.

1) Acetylene generated by the reaction of calcium carbide with water can synthesize many organic compounds such as: synthetic rubber, artificial resin, acetone, keone, carbon black, etc.; At the same time acetylene oxide flame is widely used in metal welding and cutting.
(2) When powdered calcium carbide is heated with nitrogen, calcium cyanamide is generated, namely lime nitrogen:
CaC2 + N2 → CaCN2 + C, ΔH = -296kJ/mol
Lime nitrogen is an important raw material for preparation of cyanamide. The melt produced by the reaction of heated lime nitrogen with salt is used in gold mining and nonferrous metal industry.

Calcium carbide is stored in a cool, dry and well-ventilated warehouse. Keep away from fire and heat source. Keep relative humidity below 75%. The package must be sealed and protected from moisture. Should be stored separately from acids and alcohols, and do not mix storage. The storage area shall be equipped with suitable materials to hold the leakage
