| Pharmacological action | Pharmacodynamics Neomycin belongs to the aminoglycoside class of antibacterial agents, with an antibacterial spectrum similar to that of kanamycin. It has a powerful antibacterial effect on most Gram-negative rods such as Escherichia coli, proteus species, Salmonella and Pasteurella multocida, and is also sensitive to Staphylococcus aureus. Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Gram-positive bacteria (except Staphylococcus aureus), rickettsiae, anaerobic bacteria and fungi are resistant to this product. Pharmacokinetics Neomycin is rarely absorbed by internal and topical application, only 3% of the total amount is excreted in the urine after internal administration and most of it is excreted in the faeces without change. Absorption may be increased in the presence of inflammation or ulceration of the intestinal mucosa. Injectable administration is rapidly absorbed and the in vivo process is similar to that of kanamycin. |
