Description
principle:

The grip strength of a nail refers to the force required to pull the nail out of wood. When a nail is driven or twisted into wood, the surrounding wood fibers are compressed or partially severed, creating pressure on the side of the nail where the wood fibers are separated. When the nail is pulled out of the wood, frictional forces act on the side of the nail. This frictional force is influenced not only by the type, diameter, and shape of the nail but also by factors such as the direction of the wood grain, density, and moisture content of the wood. The standard method for measuring wood grip strength typically involves using the same type of nail, driving or inserting it into the face, edge, or end of wood specimens to a specified depth, and then conducting a pull-out test on a tensile testing machine at a uniform loading rate. The measured force can be used to compare the grip strength of different tree species, grain orientations, and densities, among other factors.

Usage method:
1,Prepare the test specimen: The test specimen is a rectangular piece of wood with dimensions of 150mm × 50mm × 50mm, with the length aligned in the direction of the grain.
2,Prepare the test nails: The test nails are regular low carbon steel screws with a nail shaft diameter of Φ2.5mm and a nail length of 45mm. Do not use nails with defects such as rust, bent tips, or damaged threads. Each nail should be used only once.
3,Clean the test nails and mark them at a distance of 30mm from the nail tip.
4,On any face, any edge, and both ends of the specimen, perpendicular to the surface of the specimen, use a tool to screw the test nail into the indicated position on the wooden illustration below, aligning the surface of the wood with the marked line on the nail. Allow for a tolerance of up to 1mm. In the case of harder wood or specimens prone to bending due to difficulty in nailing, pre-drill a guide hole with a diameter of approximately 1.8mm and a depth of about 20mm at the corresponding position on the specimen, and then screw the nail into the specimen until it reaches the marked point. If the wood cracks during the process of screwing in the nail, select a new specimen with the same characteristics.
5.Place the wooden specimen with the nail in the lower fixture and slowly raise the fixture using the machine's control. This will allow the grip nail fixture to securely hold the nail head. Once the wood separates from the lower fixture base (indicated by the arrow in the diagram below), zero the force value on the machine. Control the machine to ascend at a speed of 2±0.5mm per minute to extract the nail until the load force reading on the machine shows a significant decrease, then stop.

6,After the test, immediately cut a wooden block from the middle of the specimen with dimensions of approximately 50mm × 50mm × 10mm (aligned with the grain direction). Determine the moisture content of the wood sample according to the GB/T 1931 standard (Note: The machine being used does not support testing the moisture content of the wood sample).
7,Upon completion of the test, record the test data and results.
