Polyformaldehyde 

Thermoplastic crystalline polymer. Known as "super steel" or "match steel", also known as polyoxymethylene. POM for short. Generally, the polymers obtained by formaldehyde polymerization have low degree of polymerization and are susceptible to pyrolytic polymerization. Can be used as organic chemical, synthetic resin raw materials, also used as fumigant medicine.

Nature
White flammable crystalline powder with formaldehyde odor. Dissolve slowly in cold water, dissolve quickly in hot water. The solubility of water at 20ºC is 0.24g/100cmH2O. Insoluble in ethanol and ether. 
General performance
POM is a smooth, shiny hard and dense material, light yellow or white, thin wall part is translucent. Combustion characteristics are easy to burn, from the fire to continue to burn, the upper end of the flame is yellow, the lower end is blue, melting dripping, there is a strong irritant formaldehyde taste, fishy smell. Polyformaldehyde is white powder, generally opaque, good coloring, specific gravity 1.41-1.43 grams/cubic centimeter, molding shrinkage rate 1.2-3.0%, molding temperature 170-200ºC, drying conditions 80-90ºC2 hours. The long-term heat resistance of POM is not high, but it can reach 160ºC in the short term. The short-term heat resistance of homopolymer POM is more than 10ºC higher than that of copolymer POM, but the long-term heat resistance of copolymer POM is about 10ºC higher than that of homopolymer POM. It can be used in the temperature range of -40ºC~100ºC for a long time. POM is easily decomposed at 280ºC, and irritant and corrosive gases occur during decomposition. Therefore, the mold steel should be made of corrosion-resistant materials.
Mechanical properties
POM has high strength, rigidity, good elasticity and wear resistance. Its mechanical properties are excellent, the specific strength can reach 50.5MPa, the specific stiffness can reach 2650MPa, and the metal is very close. The mechanical properties of POM change little with temperature, and the change of copolymerized POM is a little bigger than that of homopolymerized POM. The impact strength of POM is higher, but the conventional impact is inferior to ABS and PC. POM is sensitive to notches, which can reduce impact strength by as much as 90%. The fatigue strength of POM is very prominent. After 10 alternating loads, the fatigue strength can reach 35MPa, while the fatigue strength of PA and PC is only 28MPa. The creep of POM is similar to that of PA, only 2.3% at 20ºC, 21MPa and 3000h, and is little affected by temperature. POM has small friction coefficient and good wear resistance (POM> PA66> PA6> ABS> HPVC> PS> PC), the limit PV value is very large, self-lubrication is good. POM products on grinding, high load action is easy to produce noise like screaming.

Electrical performance
POM has good electrical insulation and is almost not affected by temperature and humidity. The dielectric constant and dielectric loss vary very little over a wide range of temperature, humidity and frequency. Excellent arc resistance and can be maintained at high temperature. The dielectric strength of POM is related to the thickness, which is 82.7kV/mm when the thickness is 0.127mm and 23.6kV/mm when the thickness is 1.88mm.
Environmental performance
POM is not resistant to strong acid and oxidizer, and has certain stability to oleic acid and weak acid. POM has good solvent resistance, resistance to hydrocarbons, alcohols, aldehydes, ethers, lubricants and weak bases, and can maintain considerable chemical stability at high temperatures. Small water absorption, good dimensional stability.

At higher temperatures can become formaldehyde vapor, easy to replace high concentration of formaldehyde to participate in various reactions, is conducive to chemical, pharmaceutical and other chemical synthesis and other industrial applications, especially in the use of anhydrous formaldehyde as raw material synthesis, widely used.
