Tetrachloroethylene, also known as perchloroethylene, is an organic compound with the molecular formula C2Cl4. It easily evaporates into the air with a pungent, sweet smell. Soluble substances such as aluminum chloride, mercury chloride and rubber. It can be miscible with ethanol, ether, chloroform and benzene. Soluble in about 10000 times the volume of water.

PCE is

Tetrachloroethylene is being substituted in Europe for similar but more hazardous trichloroethylene. It appears in a few consumer products including paint strippers and spot removers. It is also used in aerosol preparations.

It is used in neutrino detectors where a neutrino interacts with a neutron in the chlorine atom and converts it to a proton to form argon.
