Description

TC2 titanium alloy
TC2 alloy is a near-α-type titanium alloy with medium strength and good plasticity. It contains 4% α-stable element Al and 1.5% β-stable element Mn. This alloy cannot be strengthened by heat treatment and is only used in the annealed state. TC2 alloy has relatively satisfactory process plasticity, weldability and thermal stability. The long-term working temperature can reach 350°C, and the short-term working temperature is 750°C.

The semi-finished products of TC2 alloy include plates, strips, bars, pipes, forgings and die forgings. The alloy is suitable for the manufacture of sheet metal stamping and welding parts, etc.


TC2 heat treatment system

1) Annealing

Plates and plate parts: 660-710°C, 15-60min, air cooling or slower cooling; bars, forgings and pipes: 740-790°C, 1-2h, air cooling.

2) Stress relief annealing

545-585ºC, 0.5-6h, air cooling or furnace cooling.


Effect of forging and heat treatment on TC2 hardness

(1) The annealing temperature has little effect on the hardness of TC2 titanium alloy raw materials. After annealing at 740-790°C, the hardness value of the bar does not change much. After exceeding 800°C, the hardness value increases slightly.

(2) After annealing, furnace cooling can significantly soften the TC2 titanium alloy material. After furnace cooling, the furnace temperature has little effect on the hardness. It is recommended to choose 600-650 °C.

(3) The cooling method after forging has a great influence on the hardness. The hardness value is the lowest after water cooling, and the hardness value of air cooling, air cooling and slow cooling increases in turn.

(4) The cooling method after forging has a significant impact on the microstructure. Acicular martensite can be seen in water-cooled and air-cooled samples. Few flaky ot phases precipitated; air-cooled and slow-cooled samples showed obvious flaky ot phases, and the slower the cooling rate after forging, the coarser and clearer the flaky ot phases precipitated on the residual p matrix. The recrystallization phenomenon of equiaxed Ot phase is more obvious.


TC2 process performance and requirements

1) Formability

The alloy has good process plasticity in hot state. Generally, hot stamping is recommended. If the parts are formed in a cold state, intermediate annealing should be used, and the annealing temperature is 650-680°C. When stamping complex parts, it should be formed under heating. The blank can be heated by resistance heating or oxy-acetylene torch, and the heating temperature is generally 550-600 °C.

2) Welding performance

TC2 alloy is a nearly α-type titanium alloy, which contains a small amount of β phase in the annealed state, and is suitable for argon arc welding, spot welding and seam welding. Welded joints are not prone to defects such as cracks and shrinkage cavities. The strength and plasticity of fusion welded joints are close to those of the base metal. After welding, it is best to carry out stress relief annealing to eliminate the internal stress of welding.
