Vitamin B1, thiamine or vitamin B1 is a water-soluble vitamin of the B complex, and thiamine is used in the biosynthesis of the neurotransmitters acetylcholine and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). In yeast, TPP is also needed in the first step of alcoholic fermentation. Thiamine is used by all living things, but it is only synthesized in bacteria, fungi, and plants. Animals have to get it from their diet, so, for us, it's an essential nutrient. The characteristic polyneuritis occurs in birds with insufficient intake. | |
