Jusu Carbon's UHP Graphite Electrode

UHP graphite electrode are mostly made of 100% high-specification needle coke. Compared with HP and RP grades, UHP Graphite Electrode requires highest technical expertise in each of the main process steps in making them, particularly baking, extrusion and graphitizing. The electrodes come with a wide range of sizes, but diameter of  600mm and 700mm high performance. UHP graphite electrode is often used for ultra high power electric arc furnaces (EAF) with current density greater than 25 A/cm2.

Notes on the use of graphite electrode

1. When loading the charge into the electric furnace, in order to reduce the impact on the electrode when the charge collapses, the big bulk material should be placed near the central bottom of the electric furnace, and at the same time, be careful not to use a large amount of non-conductive objects such as lime to accumulate directly under the electrode, which affecting the power supplying or breaking the electrode.
2. Should pay attention to the position of the furnace cover. If the furnace cover deviates the electrode rubs against the furnace cover, it will result in electrode damage and scraping when the electrode rises or falls.
3. When connecting the electrodes, first blow the dust in the nipple hole with compressed air, then align it with the center, and slowly screw it in vertically. The force used when screwing the nipple into the electrode hole should be smooth and average and the tightening torque should comply with the regulations. Refer to Fig.1 and Fig.2. Before the ends of the two electrodes are in connected, blow off the dust again with compressed air and then tighten.
4. During the electrode connection, the upper and lower branch electrodes should be kept vertical, and the upper branch electrode is aligned with the center line and slowly screwed into to prevent the damage to the thread and affect the connection effect.
5. When connecting the electrode, if it is found that the nipple bolt is detached, the joint bolt should be replaced and then connected.
6. After the electrode is connected, if it is found that there is a gap, it is necessary to find out the reasons so that can be used after eliminating the connection gap.
7. When holding the electrode, the holder must avoid the joint area and do not hold the electrode within the cordon line. See Fig.3.
8. The electrode should be used vertically to avoid tilting operation.
9. The electrode should not be used as carbon adding material to prevent from deterioration of electrode performance.
10. Due to the different raw materials and manufacturing processes used by different manufacturers, the physical and chemical properties of the electrodes and nipples are different. Therefore, generally it is not allowed to use different manufacturers' nipples and electrodes in series.
11. The furnace cover should be well sealed to reduce the amount of air entering. The combustion-supporting nozzle and oxygen should be properly used to reduce the oxidation consumption at high temperatures.
12. For electric furnaces with large vibration, the method of applying the pins can also be adopted to prevent threads loosening and releasing.
13. The electrode and nipple end threads are of three threads per inch and four threads per inch. Pay attention to the type of threads ends of the life spreader when using. The number of threaded type of the nipples and electrodes end types should match each other.

The Analysis of Graphite Electrode Accident
Accident analysis of graphite electrode breaking, falling off and dropping blockhappen, which is an accident phenomenon, as shown in Fig.4. There are multiple reasons for abnormal consumption, some of which are caused by the electrode quality and some are caused by improper use by the customer.
