Platform aluminum chloride, or aluminum trichloride, with the chemical formula AlCl3, is a compound of chlorine and aluminum. Aluminum chloride melting point, boiling point is very low, and will sublimate, for ionic covalent compounds. Molten aluminum chloride does not conduct electricity easily, unlike most salts containing halogen ions, such as sodium chloride. AlCl3 adopts YCl3 structure and is the densest stacking structure of Al3+ cube, while Al3+ occupies adjacent tetrahedral gaps of the densest stacking frame of Br−. At melting, AlCl3 produces a volatile dimer, Al2Cl6, which contains two three-center four-electron chlorine bridge bonds. At higher temperatures, Al2Cl6 dimers dissociate to form planar triangular AlCl3, similar in structure to BF3. Aluminum chloride is a very common Lewis acid. In the chemical industry, it is often used as a catalyst for Fourier - gram reactions. It is also used in polymerization and isomerization of hydrocarbons. Aluminium monochloride (AlCl) can also be formed from aluminium, but this compound is very unstable and only occurs in gaseous form. Industrially, it is processed from bauxite and is produced by an exothermic reaction between aluminium and chlorine

It is mainly used as hardener for precision casting mold shell. It can be used as wood preservative and papermaking sizing precipitator. It is the raw material of hydrocracking catalyst monomer in petroleum industry. It is used in wool refining (carbonizing plant fibers), aluminum hydroxide gel production, dyeing and pharmaceutical industry and picture tube production.
