Description
Carbomer also called Carbobol or Carboxypoly-methylene is a generic name for synthetic high molecular
 weight polymers of acrylic acid used as thickening, dispersing, suspending and emulsifying agents in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. They may be homopolymers of acrylic acid, crosslinked with an allyl ether pentaerythritol, allyl ether of sucrose or allyl ether of propylene. Carbomers are found in the market as white
 and fluffy powders. They have the ability to absorb, retain water and swell to many times their original volume. Carbomers codes (910, 934, 940, 941 and 934P) are an indication of molecular weight and the specific components of the polymer .

Carbopol/Carbomer has good thickening, hydropphilic gelating, viscosity,emulsifying,suspending and film-forming properties.
(1) Be made into controlled release drug as slow release material,such as ascorbic acid, aspirin, lithium, atropine sulfate,  chlorpheniramine,  theophylline and so on.
(2) In medicine formulations for external use,as carrier substrate, it can be applied in paste,suppository,cream,gels and emulsion ect.
(3) With its gelating,viscosity and firm-forming property, it can be used as bioadhesive in carrier substrate and drug. Because of long retention time with mucous membranes of tissue , it enhances bioavailability of drug.
(4) With its suspending capacity, it can effectively suspend insoluble ingredients to form a homogenous dispersion system when used in oral suspension. This system is safe, effective, stabilized and protected from peculiar smell, thus raising bioavailability.
