Gatifloxacin (brand names GatifloTequin, and Zymar) is an antibiotic of the fourth-generation fluoroquinolone family, that like other members of that family, inhibits the bacterial enzymes DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV.
It was patented in 1986 and approved for medical use in 1999.

The synthesis of novel quinoline derivatives begins with the reaction of the starting material, cyclopropyl-6,7-difluoro-8-methoxy-4-oxo-1,4-dihydroquinoline-3-carboxylic acid, with a variety of reagents such as alcohols, amines and acids. These reactions produce a range of quinoline derivatives with different functionalities. The compounds produced can then be further modified to generate new compounds with potential therapeutic activities. For example, the reaction of the starting material with an amine can produce a quinolone derivative which can then be subjected to a range of other reactions such as reduction, oxidation or alkylation to produce a range of compounds with different properties.
